  35. A. NOTE TO USERS OF BIRDDATA 2.X.
  36. This version of BirdData uses a completely different file 
  37. structure from previous versions.  It is possible to run 
  38. BirdData 3 and a previous version simultaneously without 
  39. harm.  It is recommended that version 3.x be installed to a 
  40. completely different directory than 2.x, so that files don't 
  41. get "jumbled."
  42.  
  43. There is a conversion program (convert.exe) included to convert 
  44. 2.x files to 3.x format.  The conversion program installs to 
  45. your BDATA3 directory along with the rest of the files, so it 
  46. may be run later.  If the conversion is run after data has been 
  47. entered in 3.x format, THE NEW DATA WILL BE OVERWRITTEN.  
  48. Consequently, the conversion should only be done once.  Your 
  49. version 2.x data will not be disturbed by the conversion 
  50. process.
  51.  
  52. If you are a registered user of an older version, there is no 
  53. charge to upgrade.  If, after installing version 3.x you see the 
  54. shareware "nag" screen, it means that the SETUP program did not 
  55. find the version 2 registration key.  You need to manually copy 
  56. the key (BDATAREG.KEY) from your version 2 directory or the 
  57. distribution diskette to the version 3 directory.  In most 
  58. cases SETUP will take care of this automatically.
  59.  
  60. I. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION.
  61. BirdData is a custom database for the types of records useful
  62. to bird keepers.  The program is oriented towards the
  63. needs of Parrot breeders, but may be useful to pet owners as
  64. well.
  65.  
  66. Bird records include identification information, fields for 6 
  67. items of user-defined data, and weight/journal for up to 2000 
  68. lines.  Weight information may be shown graphically for 
  69. individual birds and various groupings of birds.  Bird records 
  70. are placed in user-defined groups.
  71.  
  72. There is a search function for bird records that allows
  73. searching for a text string among any of the identification
  74. items or the six user-defined items.
  75.  
  76. A handy daily-weigh function will locate all babies that are a 
  77. specific age or less on a specific date, and allow weights and 
  78. comments for that date to be entered.  This is useful both for 
  79. daily entering of data, or for entering groups of paper-written 
  80. info maintained on a per day basis.
  81.  
  82. Pair data includes identification information, information on
  83. bird origins, free-form date-stamped diary entries, and ongoing
  84. egglaying data.  The program will calculate hatchdates, based
  85. on user input or prior data.
  86.  
  87. Pet data was maintained separately in previous versions, but is 
  88. integrated with the rest of the bird data in version 3.0.
  89.  
  90. Most records and lists may be printed to provide permanent
  91. records.
  92.  
  93. Full documentation is included in the form of a Windows Help
  94. file.  When you desire help, press your F1 function key for
  95. context-sensitive help, or press the help key if you are in a
  96. dialog box.
  97.  
  98. II. Program requirements.
  99.  
  100. BirdData requires an IBM compatible 286 or better, running
  101. Windows 3.1, with at least 4 megs of RAM.  A 386 with 8 megs or 
  102. more is recommended.  A mouse is required for some funtions.
  103. About 1 megs of hard-drive space is required to install, and each
  104. bird record will use about 2K of disk space initially and more 
  105. as the data increases.

  107. III. Installation.
  108.  
  109. If you obtained BirdData by downloading it from a computer 
  110. Bulletin Board (BBS) or another online source, one necessary 
  111. file may not have been included.  You will need a file called 
  112. VBRUN300.DLL, which is almost always available from any source 
  113. that would have BirdData.  On BBS systems the file will usually 
  114. be called VBRUN300.ZIP or VBRUN3.ZIP.  Registered versions 
  115. obtained from the author should always include VBRUN300.  If 
  116. the file is included with the program it should be installed by 
  117. the setup procedure; if it is independently obtained it should 
  118. be unzipped and placed in your Windows\System Directory.
  119.  
  120. To install BirdData, run the included setup program.  If the 
  121. program is on a floppy disk, you can use File/Run in the Program 
  122. Manager and type a:bdsetup or b:bdsetup, whichever drive is involved.  
  123. You can use the same technique to run setup from a directory on your 
  124. hard drive by supplying the full path, such as c:\temp\bdsetup.  
  125. Alternatively you can use File manager to find the files and 
  126. double-click on BDSETUP.EXE.
  127.  
  128. Windows 95 users can use the "Add/Remove Programs" item in the 
  129. Control Panel to find and start BDSETUP.
  130.  
  131. IV.  Getting Started.
  132.  
  133. The SETUP will create a "Bird" program group, with icons for 
  134. the program and the various text files.  Double-click the 
  135. BirdData icon to start the program.
  136.  
  137. The best way to familiarize yourself with the program elements 
  138. on screen is to click the help (question mark) icon, or choose 
  139. "Help" "Overview" from the menus.  In the helpfile's overview, 
  140. you may graphically choose different program elements to see an 
  141. explanation of their function.
  142.  
  143. Now click the "New Bird" icon (the "chick-in-shell").  Select a
  144. category and input a bird's information.  Don't worry about getting
  145. everything right; you can always edit it or delete the record later.
  146.  
  147. Add a couple of additional records, then try out the other
  148. program elements as they relate to those records.  When you are
  149. comfortable, you can convert any paper data you have to the
  150. BirdData format and begin to use the program on a daily basis.
  151.  
  152. V.  FILES AND UNINSTALLING
  153.  
  154. When BirdData is installed, a program (UNINSTAL.EXE) and a data 
  155. file (INSTALL.LOG) are placed in the BData3 directory.  The 
  156. following information is provided to aid in removing the 
  157. program in case those files are lost or damaged.
  158.  
  159. Files distributed with BirdData:
  160.  
  161. BDSETUP.EXE 
  162. This file contains all of the program files.  Running it will 
  163. install the files where they belong, and will also produce a 
  164. record and program that can be used to uninstall this package. 
  165.  
  166. README.TXT 
  167. The text file you are reading now.  It is placed outside 
  168. the main install program so that it is readable before the 
  169. program is installed. 
  170.  
  171. VENDINFO.DIZ, FILEID.DIZ
  172. Information files for shareware distributors and online 
  173. services.  These explain distribution rights and allowable 
  174. methods.
  175.  
  176. Files installed by BirdData:
  177.  
  178. Main Program directory files
  179. BDATA3.EXE, BDATA3.HLP, BDATA3.INI, README.TXT, UNINSTAL.EXE, INSTALL.LOG.
  180.  
  181. An Icons subdirectory under the main program directory is 
  182. created by the install and a number of custom icons included 
  183. with BirdData are placed in it; they were drawn by the author 
  184. or by Sally Blanchard. Sally's all have a file name beginning 
  185. with 'SB'.  You may use these as you wish, to replace the bird 
  186. group icons in the program defaults.  There is also a blank 
  187. icon included to use as a template for creating your own 
  188. icons.  You will need an icon editor; there are many free and 
  189. shareware editors available; IconWorks is included with 
  190. registered copies from the author and is directly accessible 
  191. from the Tools menu.
  192.  
  193. Windows\System directory files
  194. BDTLIBR.VBX, CMDIALOG.VBX, GRID.VBX, 
  195.  
  196. Registered users will have three additional files: 1) BDATAREG.KEY;  
  197. this file must be in your BData3 directory, and will keep the 
  198. startup shareware screen from appearing.  If you upgrade to a 
  199. new version of BirdData, do not delete this file - it will work 
  200. with all future versions; 2&3) ICONWRKS.EXE and ICONWRKS.HLP, 
  201. an icon editor that can be called from the BirdData tools menu.
  202.  
  203. Files required by BirdData:
  204.  
  205. VBRUN300.DLL 
  206. A "runtime" library for programs written in Visual Basic 3.0.  
  207. This file is almost always available from any source for 
  208. BirdData.  From on-line sources, look for VBRUN3.ZIP or 
  209. VBRUN300.ZIP.  It must be placed in your Windows\System 
  210. directory.
  211.  
  212. Files created by BirdData:
  213.  
  214. BirdData will make a one-line section addition to your WIN.INI
  215. file.  This entry tells the program the directory path to the
  216. program files.
  217.  
  218. BirdData will create a number of .REC files and .NDX files in
  219. your BDATA3 directory for the storage of data.  If you follow
  220. good backup procedures, these are the most important to
  221. backup, along with BDATA3.INI.
  222.  
  223. Uninstalling BirdData:
  224.  
  225. If the UNINSTAL.EXE program and INSTALL.LOG file have been left 
  226. intact in the BData3 directory, running the program will remove 
  227. all files that were installed with BirdData.  The uninstaller 
  228. does not know anything about the files created by the program, 
  229. so those require manual deletion. If the UNINSTAL program has 
  230. been removed, use the file list above to determine which files 
  231. to remove.

  233. VI.  Troubleshooting.
  234.  
  235. Errors will frequently relate to a corrupted .INI file. You may 
  236. load BDATA3.INI into Windows Notepad or a similar text-only 
  237. editor and look for obviously bad entries.  Always make a 
  238. backup of the file before changing any entries, since it is 
  239. easy to make problems worse.
  240.  
  241. Some errors may be corrected by use of the Rebuild Indices menu 
  242. item in the Category menu.  If a specific record causes 
  243. problems all of the time, either restore a backup copy or else 
  244. delete the record and do an index Rebuild.  In the latter case 
  245. you would lose that record's data, which is a good reason to do 
  246. frequent backups.
  247.  
  248. VII.  Getting future Upgrades.
  249.  
  250. When you register BirdData with the author, you will receive a 
  251. copy of the latest version and a registration key that removes 
  252. the startup screen.  That key file will work with future 
  253. versions of the program, so no upgrade fee will be required.
  254.  
  255. Current versions of BirdData can always be found at the 
  256. author's internet FTP site: 
  257. ftp://redshift.com/arcatpet/bdata/bdataxxx.zip where xxx is the 
  258. version number.  There is also a jump available from the 
  259. author's web page at http://www.arcatapet.com

  261. Registered users who do not have online access may get a disk 
  262. copy from the author for a fee of $5 ($7 non-US).  Send a short 
  263. note indicating your registered status and requesting the 
  264. latest copy.  Please use the same name under which you are 
  265. registered.

  267. VIII.  Registration and Distribution.
  268.  
  269. BirdData is shareware.  Free use is extended to any user for a 
  270. reasonable evaluation period;  typical idea of "reasonable" is 
  271. 30 days.  If use is continued, the program should be registered 
  272. with the author.  Registration fee is $30.  Registrants receive 
  273. a disk copy of the latest version of BirdData.  A convenient 
  274. form for registration is included in the Help file (and may be 
  275. printed from there).  Until you register, there will be nag 
  276. screens asking you to register, which you will have to respond 
  277. to.  When you register, this annoyance will go away. Otherwise, 
  278. this version is complete and un-crippled in any way.  As a 
  279. registration incentive, the author will provide on request two 
  280. free scanned images from your original prints or slides, when 
  281. sent with the registration.

  283. Commercial use:  BirdData may be used commercially, as long
  284. as there is a registered copy for each computer/terminal that
  285. is using it.
  286.  
  287. You may freely distribute BirdData as long as no fees are
  288. charged for the program, and all necessary files are included.  
  289. Shareware services may charge their normal fees for 
  290. distribution of the disk, so long as it is clear to the 
  291. purchaser that they are not buying the program itself.
  292.  
  293. If you are a registered user, do not distribute the file
  294. BDATAREG.KEY, which identifies you as the user (This
  295. identification shows up in the startup logo and the About box).
  296.
